<a name="_Hlk162423098" id="_Hlk162423098">Dr Hisashi Amaya</a>, a member of the Tubular Products Technical Service &amp; Solution Dept., Tubular Products Technology Div., Nippon Steel Corporation, has been awarded the 2024 AMPP Fellow Honor Award by the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP)* in the USA. The award was presented in recognition of his contribution to the development of Corrosion Resistance Alloys (CRAs) -for the energy sector, including oil and gas development, as well as his many years of significant contribution to the testing method standard setting committee and the administration of the society. The award ceremony was held in New Orleans, USA, on 6 March 2024 in conjunction with the AMPP 2024 Conference &amp; Expo.

*: The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) is a non-profit organization formed in 2021 through the merger of NACE International (founded in 1943, headquartered in Houston, Texas) and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings (founded in 1950, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). AMPP serves as a global community of over 54,000 individual members across 130+ countries, comprising engineers and professionals dedicated to materials corrosion prevention and protection.

The Fellow Honor Award, which has been awarded this time, recognizes significant contributions in the field of materials protection and performance. It acknowledges academic, leadership, technical, and policy efforts related to the protection and performance of materials. Within the association, Fellows are established as technical and professional leaders who serve as advisors, fostering a broad network of relationships across the industry. This prestigious award has been bestowed upon renowned university professors, independent research institution scholars, and key materials technologists from major oil companies in the past.

Throughout his career, Dr Hisashi Amaya has made significant contributions to the understanding of corrosion phenomena in hostile oil and gas production environments. He has been instrumental in developing materials tailored to these specific environments contributing to safe and stable energy production.

Furthermore, he has been an active member of the ANSI-NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 standard development and maintenance committee. This standard is globally referenced and provides material recommendations for use in oil and gas production environments containing H2S. Over the years, he has also contributed to the technical symposium sessions at the association’s annual meetings and served as a member of the committee responsible for developing testing method standards, furthering the association’s activities.

Nippon Steel has developed SM-140MS, a proprietary material for Ultra High Strength and Mildly Sour applications. This cutting edge and unprecedented performance was achieved by integrating Nippon Steel lessons learned through its lengthy experience in manufacturing high strength sour service materials combined with stringent control of key manufacturing variables such as chemical composition, melting, rolling and heat treatment.

SM-140MS is a low alloy High Strength Carbon steel OCTG material (Yield Strength ranges from 140ksi to 150ksi), suitable for Mildly Sour Service  applications. SM-140MS is Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) resistant suitable for NACE region 1 and part of region 2. Additional SSC Characterization is ongoing to extend its application domain further. As such SM-140MS is the Casing material of choice for Ultra HPHT applications where presence of H2S trace is expected. SM-140MS is manufactured under a stringent quality control in compliance with API 5CT and each heat is SSC tested, as Quality Control, per NACE TM0177 method A, solution B (pH3.5) with 0.01 bar H2S, using an applied stress of 85% SMYS.

85 Degrees is a geothermal operating company in the Netherlands, engaged in clean energy development in Bleiswijk, the western part of the Netherlands. 85 Degrees and ITECO, aim to achieve a CO2 free project, with “NSCarbolex Neutral” selected to contribute to CO2 reduction in the upstream production process.<a id="_Hlk146617791" name="_Hlk146617791"> 85 Degrees are committed to transition to clean energy, and they aim to deliver CO2 free energy, including working towards complete decarbonization of the whole supply chain, we are excited to be supplying this innovative product for geothermal project and look forward to working with 85 Degrees and ITECO long term in the Netherlands.</a>

On the 11th November 2022, Nippon Steel Corporation ("Nippon Steel"), Sumitomo Corporation and Shell held a ceremony in The Hague, the Netherlands, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the tubular steel supply.</h2>

Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corporation have been supplying tubular steel products to Shell since 1972, when they first shipped OCTG to Brunei Shell Petroleum. The Global Framework Agreement, a long-term sales contracts for OCTG, started in 2006, and through which more than 1.7 million tons of OCTG and line pipe tubular steel has been delivered to Shell’s operations worldwide.

At the ceremony, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corporation looked back on the successful history of the relationship, and Shell once again commended Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corporation's ability to deliver value by providing a total solution service of high quality products tailored to Shell’s needs, enhanced supply chain management services, and a steady response to localization requirements.

Nippon Steel, Sumitomo Corporation and Shell pledged to further strengthen their relationship, and have agreed to accelerate their collaboration beyond tubular supply into the energy transition more broadly, including areas such as hydrogen and CCS, with the goal of jointly accelerating the shift towards a carbon neutral society.
